fizmer
piano, violin, cello (22')
fizmer is a four-movement piano trio I composed in 2021 for Trilogy. The titles and musical content of the movements are based on colloquial words and phrases chosen from Robert Macfarlane’s 2015 book, Landmarks. The book is a fascinating study of words connected with the natural world that are no longer in use, or on the cusp of being lost, and Macfarlane covers a huge range of subjects: from lowlands to uplands, and waterlands to edgelands.
The work's title is an old East Anglian word that means ‘a whispering susurrus produced in reeds or grass by the action of the wind’; click on the SoundCloud player to listen to a demo recording.
