I composed The Darkling Thrush in 2018 for Polaris Vocal Ensemble and their conductor, Nicola Starkie. The work is a setting of the poem by Thomas Hardy for SSAA choir, harp or piano, and the premiere was given by Polaris and harpist Ellie Turner in February 2019. I later arranged the piece for SATB choir; this version was shortlisted by Bristol Choral Society for their 2020 Mary Otty composition prize.
